Fardou Keuning (1984 Haarlem, The Netherlands) presents a sculptural installation based upon ceremonial initiation dances. Rituals of various kinds are a feature of almost all known human societies, past or present. Although the rituals and ceremonies have different appearances, their existence is universal. Rituals aid in creating a firm sense of group identity. Humans use rituals to create social bonds and even to nourish interpersonal relationships. Rituals also create stronger connections between the living and the lifeless, energy and material.

This sculptural installation, called Mduara, combines ceremonial elements from several cultures. Fardou has chosen the Debutante Wiener Ball as an example of a western initiation ceremony. Elements from this ceremony blend with mysterious and mystic ceremonies such as those represented on the ancient shamanic Rock art in Tanzania.

Transference of energy into material, well known in voodoo culture, was a very important source of inspiration, honoring the relationship between Fardou and her sculptures - an important part of her art. Fardou refers to the sculptures as her ''creatures''. She plays with her sculptures by giving them sound effects, scent and movement, a specific surrounding and finally, she interacts with them.

The ancient primitive dancers represented on the Rock art in Tanzania came to life during a ceremony and danced a quadrille with Fardou!

The sculptural installations from Fardou Keuning and Martine de Jong are materialized thoughts. Thoughts surround us constantly, ever evolving and growing in our minds. Fardou Keuning and Martine de Jong bring them to life by offering them a place to stay as objects. Is the object eventually starting to live its own life? Most certainly! The object enters in asubtle dialogue with the creators and the beholders. The cycle gets completed once the object transforms back into thoughts, the original state. Martine de Jong and Fardou Keuning both show the intriguing process of transforming thoughts into matter. Martine de Jong displays this in an abstract way and asks herself if it is possible to meet a thought. Fardou Keuning demonstrates this in a figurative way, wondering if it is possible
to meet an object.

Fardou is involved in a nearly schizophrenic dialogue. Her thoughts on her partnership became matter during her residency in Spain in summer 2009. She captured her experiences during her initially lonesome holiday on a visual diary. Did the materialization of her lover take away the loneliness, or just accentuate it? The sculpture became more then merely matter, the mystery and power of the desire took over.

Thinking is for Martine the most important characteristic of the human being. The constant growth and metamorphosis of thoughts represent since some time ago the starting-point for her work. Thinking never stops, never stays still, is unpredictable and endless. In her sculptural installation the beholder makes integral part of the process by transforming the matter back into thoughts.

U bent van harte uitgenodigd voor de expositie THINKPATH van Martine de Jong en Fardou Keuning op 8 augustus in Amsterdam!

De sculpturale installaties van Fardou Keuning en Martine de Jong gaan over de transformatie van gedachten tot materie. Gedachten worden gevormd, groeien en ontwikkelen zich tot beelden. De verbeelding van de gedachte gaat een eigen leven leiden en daagt zowel de maker als ook de toeschouwer uit tot een dialoog. Het object wordt gedachte.Martine de Jong en Fardou
Keuning verbeelden beiden de transformatie van gedachte tot materie, maar op verschillende wijze. Martine verbeeldt dit op een abstracte manier en stelt de vraag: is het mogelijk een gedachte te ontmoeten?

In het werk van Fardou is een welhaast schizofrene dialoog te zien. Het werk is tot stand gekomen toen zij als "artist in residence" in Spanje verbleef. Tijdens deze eenzame tijd, heeft zij een beeldend dagboek geschapen, dat de eenzaamheid wegneemt maar tevens juist benadrukt. Het beeld is meer geworden dan materie, de energie van de gedachte heeft de overhand gekregen.

Martine ziet het denken als de belangrijkste menselijke eigenschap. De groei en verandering van gedachten neemt zij als uitgangspunt voor haar werk. Het denken staat nooit stil, verloopt onvoorspelbaar en is oneindig. In deze sculpturale installaties wordt het groeiproces van gedachten op een interactieve manier weergegeven: de toeschouwer wordt uitgenodigd om de
materie weer in gedachten om te zetten.

EL DESTINO DEL DISTINTO

El trabajo de Fardou logra su poder visual a partir del análisis y la crítica de las estructuras sociales; los contrastes entre nociones como riqueza y pobreza, belleza y fealdad. Lo abominable abre los ojos; y Fardou maneja este fenómeno de un modo narrativo, no anecdótico.
Su producción representa una trama casi teatral. Las esculturas conforman una especie de drama: como un “tableau vivant”. Muñecos, vueltos hacia sí mismos, insertos en un paisaje distinto, entablan un diálogo extraño bajo una luz alienante.
Fardou provoca con sus instalaciones esa sensación de aversión que abre los ojos; que puede causar resistencia y, a la vez, compasión. La serie tiene su origen en una pasión febril, que desarrolla un lenguaje visual con el que analiza y critica las estructuras sociales: la condición humana.
En la variedad de esculturas Fardou muestra una construcción materialista consistente: elementos reales –como pelo humano– encuentran el balance con la presencia exagerada –casi irreal– del hombre.

THE DESTINY OF THE DIVERSE

The work of Fardou captures its visual power by sharp obervations of social contexts: contrasts between rich and poor, views about what is beautiful and ugly. Abhorrence opens the eyes. She handles these phenomena as a narrative, but not in an anecdotal way.
The work has a strong theatrical weft. The sculptures combine some kind of visual play: almost a “tableau vivant”. Puppets, in themselves reversed, are standing in an unknown landscape, having a strange dialogue with one another in the alienating light.
Fardou knows how to invoke in her installions an abomination that opens the eyes and provokes resistance and compassion.
The sculptures grew out of a feverish passion. She developted a visual language where she analyses and criticizes social structures: the human condition.
In her sculpture, she shows a consistant materiality. Realistic elements such as human hair are brought in balance with exaggerated human appearance.

The sculptural installation tells a story, provokes questions about reality and fantasy, the dream or the soil. How come we speak about diversity instead of uniqueness? El consumo de carne en China a triplicado durante los últimos 10 años. Si se considera que para cada kilo de carne se necesitan cuatro kilos de grano, nos podemos imaginar la fuerte subida de la demanda de grano para poder complacer la de carne. Desgraciadamente, la oferta de grano y otros cereales no esta sintonizada con la demanda. Ello resulta en una fuerte subida en el precio de grano. Mas gente morirá de hambre en el mismo momento que mas gente estará gozando de mas carne. El alto precio del grano representa un grave problema para los países mas pobres, pero una inversión muy lucrativa para inversores y especuladores, lo cual podría incrementar el precio aun mas. El precio del trigo aumento durante el último año con 130%. El pan diario del uno es la muerte del otro.

La inspiración para el perro muerto la recibí durante un viaje por India. El hecho que hay perros pudriéndose en la calle me afecto. El cadáver del perro tirado por la calle simboliza el abandono y hace evidente la fragilidad de la moralidad cuando el humano no es capaz de abastecer sus necesidades básicas.
